Balmoral is a small residential suburb located nine kilometres east of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Balmoral is situated between Bulimba and Morningside to the north, and Morningside and Hawthorne to the south. The suburb is ideally positioned near Brisbane River and Brisbane CBD.
The name Balmoral is derived from the Scottish Gaelic phrase Baile Mhoireil` meaning `beautiful residence` or `majestic castle`. The suburb may have been named after the estate of the same name in Scotland, a private summer residence of the British Royal Family. Saints Peter and Paul`s Catholic School was opened in 1916 and Balmoral State High School opened in 1958.
Balmoral is mostly a quiet residential suburb. Hawthorne Park is found adjacent to Balmoral`s southern border. A shopping strip is found on Oxford Street in neighbouring Bulimba, not far from western Balmoral. Brisbane River is situated to the north and west of Balmoral, with a number of ferry stops connecting the area to nearby inner-city suburbs and Brisbane CBD.
