Belmont is an outer semi-rural residential suburb located 13 kilometres southeast of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Much of the suburb remains undeveloped bushland, but it also contains affluent residential areas with blocks far larger than those in most inner-city suburbs. Belmont`s northwest corner is the most built up portion of the suburb. Belmont is situated between Tingalpa to the north and Mackenzie to the south.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Belmont today was established as a timber-felling district in the 1850s. Two decades later, the remaining land from the cleared forests, with its rich soils near the creek, was used to grow sugar cane. The suburb is named after one of its earliest homes, Belmont House, built around 1860. The house`s name derived from the French word Bellemont, meaning beautiful mountain, presumably in reference to Mount Petrie, which is found in the suburb`s south.
Belmont Road Shopping Village and Belmont Tavern are found in the suburb`s northwestern built up corner. Its housing plots south of Dairy Swamp Road are notably larger in size, and this part of the suburb has a more semi-rural atmosphere. Belmont`s southern half is largely undeveloped bushland, with the Belmont Shooting Complex and Brisbane Sporting Clays situated here.
