Brisbane City is Brisbane`s central business district, and is also known as "Brisbane CBD" or "the city". Situated on a point on the northern bank of the Brisbane River, Brisbane City is surrounded by the river on its eastern, southern, and western sides. As the centre point of Queensland`s state capital, Brisbane City features a large array of skyscrapers, affording the CBD a skyline that can be seen from the city`s outer suburbs and afar.
Following European settlement, Brisbane was established as a penal settlement in the early 1800s. Some of Brisbane City`s earliest streets are found at the Early Streets of Brisbane heritage-listed archaeological site at sections of Albert Street, George Street, William Street, North Quay and Queen`s Wharf Road. Up until 1964, a Brisbane City Council regulation limited building heights to 40 metres. The suburb`s first skyscrapers were built in the early 1970s.
Brisbane City Botanic Gardens are located in Brisbane City`s south, on the suburb`s riverfront tip. Queen Street Mall is found in the suburb`s centre.
