East Brisbane is a waterside residential suburb located five kilometres southeast of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Sitting on the southern bank of Brisbane River, East Brisbane is within convenient reach of Brisbane CBD, which can be accessed by road via the famous Story Bridge, in neighbouring Kangaroo Point. East Brisbane is situated between New Farm to the north and Woolloongabba to the south.
East Brisbane, like much of Brisbane, developed most rapidly during the property boom of the 1880s. One of its earliest developments was the Heathfield Estate, which was released in 1886. East Brisbane State School opened in 1899 and Mowbray Park on the Brisbane River was established in 1904. The prestigious Anglican Church Grammar School, more commonly known as Churchie, opened in the suburb in 1912.
Mowbray Park sits on the Brisbane River, opposite New Farm, and is found in East Brisbane`s north. Anglican Church Grammar School, or Churchie, is found in the suburb`s east, with its sporting fields situated adjacent to Norman Creek. Brisbane`s famous stadium the Gabba is found adjacent to East Brisbane in neighbouring Woolloongabba.
