Fortitude Valley is a commercial and residential suburb located two kilometres northeast of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Often called "The Valley", the suburb is renowned as Brisbane`s leading nightlife hub, with its array of nightclubs, bars and other entertainment venues. Fortitude Valley features two pedestrian malls at Chinatown and Brunswick Street Mall. The suburb is situated between Bowen Hills to the north and Kangaroo Point to the south.
The suburb takes its name from a ship named Fortitude, which arrived in Brisbane in 1849. Many of the ship`s Scottish immigrants settled in the area. From the 1900s to the 1960s, Fortitude Valley was Brisbane`s premier shopping precinct, home to the McWhirters, Beirne`s and Overells` department stores. Myer, David Jones and Waltons later bought out the department stores.
Fortitude Valley features numerous restaurants, bars, nightclubs and hotels. The recently redeveloped James Street Precinct features a number of luxury boutiques and restaurants set among lush tropical trees and vines. The beautifully designed Calile Hotel is regarded as the precinct`s centrepiece.
