Gumdale is a residential outer suburb located 16 kilometres southeast of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb has a semi-rural aesthetic character, and its average property size is between roughly 5,000 to 10,000 square metres, its homes are thus largely on acreage plots. Gumdale is coveted as Brisbane`s nearest acreage suburb to the CBD, with a drive to the city taking only 15 to 20 minutes. The suburb is situated between Wakerley to the north and Chandler to the south. Gumdale is also not far from the shores of Moreton Bay, which lie to its northeast.
Following European settlement, land was first divided and auctioned in the Gumdale area around 1885. Grassdale State School opened in 1935 and was renamed Gumdale State School in 1942. Originally known as Grassdale, after the grass trees that grew in the area, the suburb was renamed Gumdale in 1942. The suburb`s post office opened in 1941 and the name change was made to avoid confusion with the suburb of Grassdale in South Australia.
Gumdale is almost entirely residential. It does however feature Kurshonbrooke Lodge, an equestrian facility, and two swim schools. The bayside suburbs of Manly, Lota and Thorneside are found to the northeast, affording Gumdale proximity to Moreton Bay.
