Hemmant is a riverside residential and industrial suburb located 11 kilometres east by road from Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb`s northern portion, which partially sits on the Brisbane River, is mostly and industrial area, while the southern half of the suburb, on the southern side of the railway line, is mostly residential. Moreton Bay is found not far to the east of the suburb. Hemmant is situated between Pinkenba to the north and Tingalpa to the south.
European settlers first used the land that makes up Hemmant today for fruit, vegetable growing and general farming. In the early 1860s, sugar cane began to be farmed in the area and mills were built to process the crop. Bulimba State School opened in 1869 and was renamed Hemmant State School in 1876, the school closed in 2010. In 1889, Queensland Aquarium opened in the suburb and featured a zoo, an aquarium and dance halls. The site was damaged during the 1893 flood, but thankfully all its animals were rescued. Closing in Hemmant in the 1890s, the Queensland Aquarium today is located in Murarrie.
Brisbane River and Bulimba Creek provide the suburb`s natural northern border next to its industrial area. The creek winds down south and ensconces Hemmant Recreation Reserve, in the suburb`s south. The suburb`s southern residential area features a number of green spaces including Hemmant Quarry Reserve, Glenwood Park, Paul Conti Park and Hemmant Park.
