Lytton is an industrial riverside suburb located 13 kilometres east of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Formerly a naval base, the suburb sits on a promontory between Brisbane River and Moreton Bay, with a bridge in the north connecting it to the suburb and island of the Port of Brisbane. Lytton`s neighbouring suburbs are Port of Brisbane to the north and Wynnum West to the south.
Following the European settlement of Australia, a pilot station and small village were established at what is now Lytton, in 1859. The suburb is most likely named after Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Queensland`s Colonial Secretary of State from 1858 to 1859. Due to the area`s strategic placement at the entrance of Brisbane River, Fort Lytton was built in 1881 during the colonial era to guard the mouth of the Brisbane River. The suburb`s village no longer exists, and Lytton today is largely an industrial suburb.
Clunie Flats is a pan found in the west of the suburb next to Moreton Bay. Port of Brisbane is Lytton`s northern neighbour, with Port Drive connecting the mainland to the suburb`s island. The mouth of Brisbane River is found adjacent to Lytton`s northern tip.
