Morningside is a large residential and commercial riverside suburb located nine kilometres east of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb`s residential and retail areas are largely concentrated in its south, while commercial facilities and light industry are situated in the north, adjacent to the Brisbane River. Morningside is located between the suburbs of Hamilton to the north and Seven Hills to the south.
The area that makes up Morningside today was first settled by Europeans in the 1870s and was primarily used for agriculture; in particular, dairy, sugarcane and tobacco production. The suburb is named after a local estate belonging to David Longlands, who in turn, is thought to have named his estate after the Scottish town or the estate`s location on the eastern side of Brisbane. The suburb was subdivided in the 1880s and Morningside once homed a quarry and the Cairnscross Dockyard. The former was converted into Keralgerie Park in 1952 and the latter was redeveloped into a commercial and residential area around 2016.
The suburb`s retail precinct is found in the central south, on Wynnum Road, not far from Balmoral Cemetery and Balmoral Park. Colmslie Recreation Reserve is situated in the suburb`s north, on the southern shore of Brisbane River, and is home to Colmslie Pool & Health Club.
