Newstead is a commercial and residential inner riverside suburb located three kilometres northeast of Brisbane`s commercial business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb features a number of parks that front Brisbane River, and its enviable proximity to Brisbane City, Fortitude Valley and New Farm, has made it a coveted place to live. Residential developments continue to flourish along Newstead`s Brisbane River frontage. The suburb is situated between Albion to the north and Teneriffe to the south.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up the suburb today was for some time an industrial one, with its riverfront dominated by timber yards, asbestos works, wharves and woolstores. The suburb is named after Brisbane`s oldest surviving residence, Newstead House, which in turn was named after Newstead Abbey in England. The suburb was serviced by trams, initially horse drawn and later electric, from 1885 to 1969. Formerly an industrial district, in recent decades, Newstead has been gentrified into a commercial and residential suburb, with its Brisbane River facing apartment blocks particularly coveted.
Newstead Park is situated on the suburb`s northern Brisbane River waterfront, at the mouth to Breakfast Creek. The park is home to Newstead House, a heritage museum. Waterfront Park is found in the suburb`s centre, on the western shore of Brisbane River. A promenade runs along Brisbane River in front of the suburb`s waterfront apartment developments, offering tranquil picturesque views.
