South Brisbane is a commercial, residential and recreational riverside suburb located two kilometres southwest of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. A recreational and commercial hub, South Brisbane sits on the southern shore of Brisbane River, opposite Brisbane CBD, and contains the South Bank entertainment and cultural locality within its folds. The European settlement of South Brisbane took place in 1843, following the Moreton Bay penal colony era, which was the precursor to the establishment of Brisbane as a city. Land sales were made and wharves were developed along the area`s Brisbane River bank. The suburb`s first street was called Stanley Quay, later known as Stanley Street. A further number of important sites are found in the suburb including the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Queensland Maritime Museum and the Queensland Cultural Centre (which consists of a number of galleries, museums, the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre).
