Spring Hill is a commercial and residential suburb located one kilometre north of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Situated north adjacent to Brisbane City, some parts of the suburb are effectively extensions of Brisbane CBD. The suburb is bounded by Herston and its expansive Victoria Park to the north, Fortitude Valley to the east, Brisbane CBD to the south and Brisbane City’s Roma Street Parkland to the west.
European settlement took place in the area that makes up Spring Hill today in the 1840s. The suburb was originally called Spring Hollow, owing to the natural springs in the area that supplemented Brisbane`s early water supply. It its early years, the suburb`s ridge was an affluent residential area and the suburb subsequently became known as Spring Hill.
Victoria Park / Barrambin is partially located in Spring Hill`s north, with the Centenary Aquatic Centre & Health Club situated within it. Local landmarks in the suburb include: the Old Windmill in Wickham Park, built in 1824; the Spring Hill Baths, the oldest public baths in Queensland; and the Sportsman Hotel, a gay bar that has been operating for over three decades.
