Teneriffe is a small residential and commercial riverside suburb located three kilometres northwest of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Sitting on the western shore of the Brisbane River, the suburb is coveted for its waterside homes and convenient proximity to Brisbane City and Fortitude Valley. Teneriffe is situated between Newstead to the north and New Farm to the south, and faces Bulimba across Brisbane River.
European settlement took place in the area in the 1880s. From 1885, Teneriffe was serviced by horse drawn trams. In 1890, land near Teneriffe House was subdivided and auctioned under the name Teneriffe Estate. The suburb originally formed part of the suburb of Bulimba when it straddled both sides of the Brisbane River. During WWII, the wharves at Teneriffe served as Australia`s largest submarine base. Formerly a riverside industrial hub, the suburb`s many wool stores and factories were converted into residential apartments in recent times.
Teneriffe features a number of heritage-listed sites, including its many former woolstores, warehouses and Teneriffe House. The suburb features a promenade walkway along much of its Brisbane River waterfront. Teneriffe Park is situated in the suburb`s central south.
