Tingalpa is a residential and recreational suburb located 13 kilometres east of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. Extensive networks of parkland punctuate the suburb’s built-up residential areas. Tingalpa is situated between Hemmant to the north and Belmont to the south.
Tingalpa Creek was surveyed by European settlers 1841 and named Tingulpa, with its name`s origins uncertain, but thought to have possibly been derived from an Aboriginal expression for a fat kangaroo, or a derivation of the Turrubal words "tangul", meaning plant for stupefying fish, and "pa", meaning place. A town was first settled in the area in the 1860s, with a post office opening in 1867.
Tingalpa features an extensive network of parks including: Gateway Park and Minnippi Parkland in the suburb`s west; Carmichael Park and Kianawah Park in Tingalpa`s central portion; and Robinson Park, Villanova Park and Torquay Crescent Park in the suburb`s east. Bulimba Creek provides Tingalpa with its natural western border and a number of its tributary creeks and brooks flow through the suburb.
