West End is a residential and commercial riverside suburb located three kilometres southwest of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb is situated on a peninsula surrounded by Brisbane River, along with South Brisbane and Highgate Hill. With its enviably central location, the suburb is renowned for its cafe and restaurant scene. West End features an array of freestanding homes and apartment buildings.
The original inhabitants of the area that makes up West End today were the Jagera and Turrbal people. Following European settlement, the suburb was first used for farms and orchards due to its fertile soil. Later developing into an industrial area, the suburb today has gone through a process of urban renewal. The suburb is named after the West End of London.
West End`s café and restaurant scene is largely centred around Boundary Street. The riverside Davies Park hosts the West End Markets every Saturday, one of the largest farmer`s markets in Greater Brisbane. The waterside Orleigh Park is found in the suburb`s southwest, at a bend in the Brisbane River.
