Woolloongabba is a recreational, commercial and residential suburb located three kilometres southeast of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb is best known as the home of the Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as the Gabba. Woolloongabba also contains Princess Alexandra Hospital. The suburb is situated between Kangaroo Point to the north and Annerley to the south.
Following European settlement, the suburb was first known as One Mile Swamp, a name in use until the early 1890s. The suburb`s present name is a compound of the Aboriginal words woolloon and gabba, meaning `fight talk place`. Princess Alexandra Hospital first opened on its current site as Diamantina Hospital in 1901. To coincide with the visit of Princess Alexandra to Brisbane in 1960, the hospital was given its present name. The Brisbane Cricket Ground, better known as the Gabba, was established in Woolloongabba in 1895.
The Gabba is located in Woolloongabba`s northeastern corner, adjacent to Kangaroo Point and East Brisbane, and within convenient reach of Brisbane City. Princess Alexandra Hospital is situated in the suburb`s southwestern corner.
