Wynnum is a residential and recreational coastal suburb located 20 kilometres east of Brisbane`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Brisbane. The suburb sits on the shores of Moreton Bay and is a popular destination for Brisbane locals due to its coastline, jetty and tidal wading pool. Wynnum is found between Port of Brisbane to the north and Manly West to the south.
The Aboriginal connection to the Wynnum area has remained robust throughout the European settlement of Brisbane. A European settler described Wynnum as a large Aboriginal camp in the 1840s. The camp was referred to as `Black`s Camp` until the 1980s. As Wynnum developed into a seaside town in the early 20th century, many of the camp`s residents moved into town to work, or moved to Stradbroke Island. The former camp was developed as a recreation reserve in the 1930s, now known as Elanora Park.
The bayside Elanora Park is located in Wynnum`s north. Further north are the Wynnum North Conservation Site and Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk. Wynnum Jetty and Pandanus Beach are situated in the suburb`s south, not far from Wynnum`s main shopping hub off Tingal Road.
